The House of Representatives summoned the ministers of finance, budget and national planning, the minister of energy, over the proposed sale of five power plants belonging to the three levels of government.

Also summoned are the Managing Director of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) and the Managing Directors of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company and the Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading Company.

In letters to agencies and made available to reporters on Sunday in Abuja, House Finance Committee Chairman Representative James Abiodun Faleke said the sale process was unconstitutional.

He added that it was also a disservice to the development of the nation and to the sharing of equity between the three levels of government.

The letters read in part: “The House of Representatives has observed with grave concern the proposed sale of the 5 National Integrated Power Plants (NIPP)”.

These are Benin Generation Company Ltd, Calabar Generation Company Ltd, Geregu Generation Company Ltd, Olorunsogo Generation Company Ltd and Omotoso Generation Company Ltd. offered by the Office of Public Enterprises (BPE).

According to him, this was without due consideration of the constitutional principles and economic policy that guided the creation of these power stations.

He denounced the proposed sale as unconstitutional and a disservice to all known principles of national development and the sharing of equity between the three levels of government.

“Given the critical role your agency plays in the sustainable energy sector in the country, you are requested to halt all further processes regarding this transaction.

“You must submit the following information for the committee to determine the way forward.”

He said the committee required the Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading Company to provide a breakdown of capacity and monthly revenue from all power stations.

He added that full disclosure of all power plants that had taken or paid for deals as well as consumed and unconsumed electricity since inception should be included.

He also requested information on all agreements with power plants on a buy or pay basis, necessary approvals by the Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading Company Board of Directors, the Federal Executive Council and others. (NOPE)
